How do you paint your ceiling white in a sleek way?
Thom NieropPainting a wall or ceiling isn't everyone's hobby, but sometimes it's necessary. Your ceiling can start to look yellow after years, or stains, cracks, or even mold can develop. Then it's time to take action. A fresh and beautiful white ceiling will give the whole room a new look. But how can you best paint a ceiling and what's all needed?
The preparation
Before you start painting the ceiling, it's important to fill holes and cracks so you have an even canvas to paint on. You can use wall filler for this. After filling, it's wise to sand the spots. You can also now tape the edges of the wall. This prevents ceiling paint from getting on the wall. Any obstacles on the ceiling, such as lighting, you should also tape off. Even better is to remove the lights. Are there still furniture pieces in the room? Then cover them with protective film.
Finally, you can degrease the ceiling. Use a cleaning agent for this and use a sponge to apply it.
Primers
To make the paint adhere well and get good coverage, it's important to first provide the ceiling with a layer of primer. Apply the primer layer with a roller brush and use a telescopic pole to spare your back. You can of course also approach it professionally and set up scaffolding. Apply the primer a day before painting the ceiling so it has enough time to dry.
Tip: This water-based primer layer reduces the suction of the ceiling
Painting the ceiling white: how does this work?
When painting a ceiling, you always start with a brush on the edges and corners. If you see streaks after brushing, don't worry. When you later work with the roller, you can go over the corners again. Use good quality paint with high coverage so the color doesn't fade as quickly.
After the edges and corners, you start the middle section of the ceiling with a roller. First apply horizontal strips and then vertical strips and let them overlap. This way the ceiling is best covered.
Tip: Immediately after painting, pull the masking tape from the edges. This prevents you from pulling off dried paint.
Some extra tips that can help you
- Do the painting during the day. It's then also easier to work from the window (a light source) inward. With artificial light, it's less easy to see if the paint covers well.
- The best temperature for painting is around fifteen degrees. Turn off your heating to prevent the paint from drying too quickly. The ideal temperature for painting the ceiling white is 15 degrees. So turn off your heating so the paint doesn't dry too quickly. If your room temperature is already 15 degrees, this tip doesn't apply.
- Besides a good brand of paint, also buy enough paint. Make sure there's always enough paint on your roller. Too little paint results in worse coverage of the paint.
