Assembling an IKEA PAX wardrobe: preparation and checks

Start PAX assembly with the right instructions and enough working space. Check the parts, assemble the wardrobe in the order specified for your model, anchor it to the wall, then fit and adjust the interiors and doors. The method varies by frame and door type. Use this checklist to prepare, alongside the IKEA instructions.

1. Check the model, space and parts

• Find the article number for the frame and the instructions for the doors and interiors. Different PAX versions can have different assembly sequences.
• Measure the intended position, including skirting boards, ceiling height and clearance for doors and drawers. Check the instructions for the space needed during assembly.
• Compare the packages and parts with your order. Sort the fittings by component and keep the floor clear.
• Check which tools and assistance the instructions require. Arrange help with heavy parts before you start.

2. Follow the sequence for your wardrobe

Do not skip steps to get to the doors sooner. As you work, check that the parts fit and that the wardrobe can stand straight in its intended position. Do not force a part that does not fit. Compare it with the diagram and article number. Stop if parts are missing or damaged and ask IKEA for advice.

3. Anchor the wardrobe to the wall

IKEA recommends anchoring PAX wardrobes to the wall. Suitable screws and plugs depend on the wall material. Read IKEA's PAX wall-anchoring guidance and follow the instructions for your model. If you cannot identify the wall material or suitable fixings, get advice before drilling or using the wardrobe.

4. Fit and check the interiors and doors

Follow the separate instructions for drawers, hinges and sliding doors. Check that doors and drawers move freely without catching. If something sits unevenly or is hard to move, check its assembly and adjustment first. Pushing a sticking door harder is not a fix.

How long does PAX assembly take?

There is no single assembly time for every PAX wardrobe. The number of frames, drawers and doors, the available space and the wall fixings all affect the work. Allow for preparation and clearing up too. When hiring help, ask for an estimate based on your configuration rather than just “assemble a wardrobe”.
